Hi Nandhu and welcome to Club Vaio.

You will need to get into Safe Mode/VGA Mode to re-enable the graphics. Try again by pressing F8 and holding the key during the boot process. VGA Mode obviously works or you would not be able to see the BIOS screens.

If you can't get into VGA Mode, I think you will have to carry out a full recovery or a repair install. Are you using XP or Vista?

Hi Nandhu,

What model Vaio do you have? The recovery process for Vaios using XP is to insert the System Recovery Disk and re-boot your system. This should take you to the Vaio Recovery Utility where you can choose to Recover Drive C:\.

Make sure you have the AC adapter connected and do not interrupt the recovery for any reason even if it appears to have stopped.

Unfortunately you will lose everything on drive C:\ so you will have to reinstall all Microsoft Updates, Vaio Updates and all the software you have installed since new.

Hi,
My Vaio model is VGN-FS215Z and I have the tried inserting the recovery disc and changed the bios to boot from the disc, windows booted from the disc, I heard the windows startup sound but the screen remains blank. Find below for the process I tried to recover
http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/tutorials/recovery/recovery.asp?site=voe_en_GB_cons&c=0&s=VGN-FS&m=1859

Can you please tell what is the exe file I shud run in the command prompt to open the vaio recovery utility. I have loaded my windows and vaio applications in c:/ drive. If I have the recovery utility screen opened, I can blindly follow the keys(Tabs/Enter/Right/Up cursor) to recover the system.

Please let me know if you need more inputs to get this sorted out.

Thanks
Nandhu

Hi Nandhu,

The path to the Recovery Utility should be: -

C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Recovery Utility\VRU.exe

I don't think your Vaio has booted from the Recovery Disc. If it had, the Recovery Utility should open in VGA mode. It sounds like your Vaio is still booting from the hard drive and not from the CD-ROM.

There is one simple solution if you are prepared to accept the loss of all data on your Vaio from both drives C: and 😧

Take out the Recovery Disc and close down. Start the Vaio and at the first Vaio logo screen, tap F10 continuously. This should start the process to return your Vaio to its Factory Defaults. Connect AC power and do not interrupt the recovery even if it appears to stop.

Hi Blencogo,
I dont know what to say. You are simply GREAT. Many thanks to you to get back my system working.I tried pressing F10 many times after first VAIO screen, and after some time, it prompted the VAIO recovery screen and then I went through all the way to install WIN XP again. Fortunately I took a back up of all my datas so I didnt lose anything.

My another problem now is NVIDIA Ge force is not enabled, I tried to update the driver, even then it says Code error 10. And because of this my screen looks bit blurred on the right bottom corner. When I looked at the display adapter it has a conflicting IRQ's .Can you please tell me how to overcome this conflict. I read in some forum to uncheck the 'use automatic settings' in resources menu of display adapter in device manager. when I look at the menu, I could see the menu but the settings is frozen so I couldnt change. Any ideas?

Please let me know if you need more inputs on this. Thanks Again 🙂

Cheers
Nandhu

Hi Nandhu,

IRQ conflict resolution is automatic in XP.

If you completely uninstall the driver (no don't disable it!!!) and do a fresh driver install, XP should resolve any conflict. While you are at it, try the latest nVidia XP Driver v174.74 here: -

http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=18050
