HI @mercedes1950, welcome to the Community.
Good to hear you're really pleased with your H400! It's a really versatile camera and as such, the range of options is often a little bewildering.
Ironically, many of the more confusing aspects of this are in the 'Auto' settings, where the camera makes a wide range of shooting decisions for you. It's often difficult to figure out why you have the results you have, wheres using more manual control (or figuring out how to 'manage' the auto settings) will reward the more 'serious' shooter.
With regard to 'Scene' settings, there is a function which will change scenes rapidly as you shoot: Scene Recognition does this and I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a real 'snapshot' photographer – point, shoot and stow away til the next shot – as any concerted effort to shoot a scene or subject will often trigger changes to the settings as you shoot.
The page I linked to above it part of a useful 'how to' for the H400 which will reward concerted reading and help you get the best out of your camera. Above all, try using the manual settings more and see if that helps with any of the issues you've encountered.
One last thing: often people forget selecting a setting and end up with odd results. You can reset the camera using the Initialise setting in the main menu, or (better) just power down the camera, remove the battery for 60 seconds, then replace and power up. Everything will then be reset to factory settings and you can start afresh.
Hope you continue enjoying your H400. Let us know if you need any further help.

Many thanks will try the manual modes and see how it goes Regards,
