So nice brand new camera.

Put nice brand new Sony memory card in and I get this message 

This memory card may not be capable of recording and playing normally

So the question is 'Why' and 'How do I get rid/sort it.'

With the memory inserted in the camera can you format it? Or does "error" not allow you to do anything?

I can't see any options on the camera to format the card, unless someone else knows how to do it.

Bit concerned about the card because where the word 'Sony' is in the top left corner, it had been black marker penned out! Wondering if the supplier (via Amazon) is selling dodgy or copied cards.

Should have said, I can still use the camera but this shows up on the screen each time I start the camera

With what you wrote about Amazon and I doubt that it is a faulty card that has been returned.
