Attention VGN-CS11 users and SONY!! Problem with FAN!

Hi everyone!

If you have recently bought a new VGN-CS11 series notebook, I'd ask that you take a moment to read this post.

Since I unboxed the new notebook, I have been experiencing strange noises from the fan unit evey time it operates. Before, it used to be simply that every time the fan stopped working, it made a soft "growl" noise (probably due to some internal vibration) for a mere second or two. Recently, however, it has also begun to make a strange, barely audible "clicking sound" as the fan starts up and operates, accompanied by the "growl" at the end, like before. At first, I was led to believe that it was just the normal operating noise that the fan made (although quite annoying!), but due to these recent developments, I am more and more convinced that this is some problem or malfunction that perhaps, will only get worse with time.

Other CS11 users have already posted in the thread "Problem with fan!!" that they also experience this problem, and, from what I've been able to gather, it does not seem like an isolated problem... but this is what we need to confirm.

That is the purpose of this thread.

I would like to ask and encourage all CS11 users to post in this thread if they also experience the same "problem" with the fan (abnormal noises that are clearly distinguishable from normal operation) or anything fan-related, especially if you have experienced them since you bought the notebook and haven't done anything that could "provoke" them (like dropping the notebook or hitting it in some way, blocking the ventilation vents, etc...). This is to have a general scope that this is not an isolated problem that is only happening to a few, and that way, perhaps Sony will take an interest and take the necessary measures to correct this problem if this, in fact, turns out to be a generalised problem.

I have already created a new case with e-Support regarding this issue. Note that these are brand new laptops that have been out on sale for barely a month, and now would be a good time to correct any problems that may arise. If this turns out to be a common problem for most CS11 users, then we should all contact Vaio-Link or e-Support and report the problem, so that Sony will take this problem into consideration if enough people have it.

Remember: the sooner, the better!

Also, perhaps it would also be of interest that those CS11 users that DON'T experience this problem also post in this thread, to see how many DO and how many DON'T... it may be interesting to also know.

Ok... without taking any more of your time, I leave this thread to fellow CS11 users and to anyone that might be able to lend a helping hand. Thanks!!!

Okay, so I've got it back. Quick turnaround, given there was a weekend in the middle -- picked up Thursday and back Tuesday.

I put a letter in with it when I sent it, outlining the problem and pointing them to this thread. I got a note back with the computer saying fan replaced and BIOS updated.

The fan still wants to spin up every few seconds but at least it's a fairly quite whirr. Or it was until about five minutes ago. Now it's become noisy again. Not yet as bad as it was when I sent it off for repair, but a lot more noisy than it was even an hour ago.

No first-time resolution here. I think the Sony people must have bought a lot of these crappy fans and, to use them up, are just installing them in every CS that comes their way.

It is crass stupidity on their part. They'll have to spend more time and resources dealing with me and paying DHL to ship the computer again, and when the time comes to replace this PC (and it might not be all that far off, I feel) I will NOT be buying SONY.

Hey Brian,

Shame you didn't get it fixed properly.

Do you know if your VAIO was shipped to Sony Europe's HQ (Belgium) or to Sony's Repair Center (Germany)?

Thanks,

Hugo

Hi there i just got my VAIO back today . It was so quick that I initially thought they just sent it back without touching it... but it looks like it's been fixed, or at least it is very quiet now. I'll let you know if it starts purring again

ps it was repaired at Teleplan Sony Repair Center, Colchester UK

Hi BrianVAIO,

hopefully someone from Sony should be in contact soon..

I have also been advised that the newer fan was used in your VAIO's repair but I'm not sure why your Vaio also had a BIOS update..

Hi Hugo. It was done in England, as far as I can tell. The DHL tracking showed it travelling to and from Ipswich.

I've had the PC on about an hour now, and it was pleasantly quiet when starting up, with just a little background fan noise and the hard disk spinning, but now the fan is spinning up in one- to two-second bursts every 8 to 10 seconds or so, with the occasional more prolonged three- to five-second burst. All I'm doing is a little web browsing and typing on this forum, stuff that shouldn't be too stressful on a machine with these specs.

On the plus side, when it is spinning up, it sounds reasonably fan-like. This time last night it was making noises like the fan was getting sick, changes/noises that if you heard the equivalent on a desk fan or from an extractor fan, you'd be looking to replace them ASAP. This is my first laptop (I've always built up my own new desktop PC every two or three years prior to this) but while it was away for repair, I was using a nine-year-old Asus laptop that my wife had stored away, and it seemed to be managing its cooling needs a lot better. Though at its peak it was noisy, the noise at least sounded like a fan, not something with a mechanical failure. The run-of-the-mill three-year-old HP laptop that comes with my job is whisper-quiet by comparison to this one and it gets plenty of hard use compared to this one.

I'll watch and wait a little more, to see how the replacement fan behaves. Seems odd that it sounded ill last night only to be sounding relatively healthy now. It's still intrusive, though, so perhaps the only way to use this laptop for work that I need to concentrate on is to listen to music using some decent earphones with a good seal.
