Hi everyone!
If you have recently bought a new VGN-CS11 series notebook, I'd ask that you take a moment to read this post.
Since I unboxed the new notebook, I have been experiencing strange noises from the fan unit evey time it operates. Before, it used to be simply that every time the fan stopped working, it made a soft "growl" noise (probably due to some internal vibration) for a mere second or two. Recently, however, it has also begun to make a strange, barely audible "clicking sound" as the fan starts up and operates, accompanied by the "growl" at the end, like before. At first, I was led to believe that it was just the normal operating noise that the fan made (although quite annoying!), but due to these recent developments, I am more and more convinced that this is some problem or malfunction that perhaps, will only get worse with time.
Other CS11 users have already posted in the thread "Problem with fan!!" that they also experience this problem, and, from what I've been able to gather, it does not seem like an isolated problem... but this is what we need to confirm.
That is the purpose of this thread.
I would like to ask and encourage all CS11 users to post in this thread if they also experience the same "problem" with the fan (abnormal noises that are clearly distinguishable from normal operation) or anything fan-related, especially if you have experienced them since you bought the notebook and haven't done anything that could "provoke" them (like dropping the notebook or hitting it in some way, blocking the ventilation vents, etc...). This is to have a general scope that this is not an isolated problem that is only happening to a few, and that way, perhaps Sony will take an interest and take the necessary measures to correct this problem if this, in fact, turns out to be a generalised problem.
I have already created a new case with e-Support regarding this issue. Note that these are brand new laptops that have been out on sale for barely a month, and now would be a good time to correct any problems that may arise. If this turns out to be a common problem for most CS11 users, then we should all contact Vaio-Link or e-Support and report the problem, so that Sony will take this problem into consideration if enough people have it.
Remember: the sooner, the better!
Also, perhaps it would also be of interest that those CS11 users that DON'T experience this problem also post in this thread, to see how many DO and how many DON'T... it may be interesting to also know.
Ok... without taking any more of your time, I leave this thread to fellow CS11 users and to anyone that might be able to lend a helping hand. Thanks!!!
I have this problem with the fan motor noise. Sony has admitted it is a known defect.
I sent it in to Sony for repair. The fan is for the moment quieter. However, the Sony repair centre corrupted the operating system and now my Word, Excel, Powerpoint and printing appliactions don't work. I have to send it back to be repaired again. This is a total nightmare. So...
WARNING: Back up files before repair.
I believe according to EU consumer protection law, if the laptop needs to be repaired a third time you are entitled to an exchange from the retailer and if the laptop needs to be repaired a fourth time you are entitled to a full refund from the retailer. This is obviously happening to a lot of people, so keep track of all the dates and get communication with Sony and the retailer in writing. Sony itself will only defer to the guarantee and no matter how many times the laptop breaks, they will not help you get a refund. You must pursue the retailer and if you bought it with a credit card the credit card company may be able to help. This is very sad, as I'm sure none of us will ever buy another Sony product or recommend them to anyone ever again.
I do hope that you actively tell people not to buy Sony. People won't have visibility of this forum as you already have to own a Sony Vaio to join Club Vaio.
File a complaint with you government consumer protection agency, tell friends and co-workers not to buy Sony and get the message out on popular laptop review websites in your countries and on YouTube. See if you can get news coverage in your countries on programmes such as BBC Watchdog. This is what I've done. Hopefully others won't buy Sony and have to deal with this nightmare of buying an expensive product and having to send it in for repair again and again.
DON'T BUY SONY..spread the word!!!
people who had their vaio repaired lately...how are they going? did you still have problems?
I'm asking this bacause I had my third repair in september and i'm terrorized the problem comes again for my pc...uff i'm tired of being terrorized...my pc has a 2 year warrany..one already passed with three reparations...only one year left.
Hi Coral Pink!
Since I had my last repair in early November (the fourth one) I still haven't experienced any abnormal noise or anything of the like. It might be too early to say, but this one could be the permanent fix, although with our past experience, saying something like this might not be too wise... yet. I guess we'll have to wait and see, but for now, it's ok.
Has anyone else with the repair since the announcement had any problems?
Hope this helps and happy new year!
I don't have my CS-11 any more. Once physically able to work on my old desktop PC again (with some help from my wife) late last Summer, I upgraded various components and switched back to using it full-time. I came across a bookmark for this thread and cannot believe that Sony has still not sorted things out, beyond offering the facility to repeatedly return the laptops under an extended warranty period. I think these laptops deserve to be treated as lemons and Sony should refund their owners or offer a non-CS/BZ laptop of at least equivalent spec as a replacement.
I'm in the market for a compact (13" screen or less) Windows 7 laptop at the moment and, tempting as the spec of some of their models is, I cannot see myself choosing Sony.
(I still find it odd that I cannot delete my account on this forum and that the "temporarily unavailable" search facility situation has not been sorted out by now.)
ok so I got my laptop back on monday and I'm happy to report that the problem is fixed. the fan is light years away from what it was, I really feel I got a good laptop now, I'm not joking

The fan of my vaio started again to have the same problems as before.
I already sent my vaio 2 times for repair and now i will send it for the 3th times in less than 1 year.
I used a notebook cooler from belkin " http://www.vmart.pk/main/images/belkin-laptop-cooling-stand.jpg " this helped to keep "fresh" my vaio but after some months the fan started make big noise again.... and now is winter i think if was summer the fan will broke again just after 2 months.
For all the people who sent the vaio for repair ... yes now is fixed but wait some months and you will see ... crazy...
Dont be so happy now because your vaio will broke again the fan problems still here they fixed nothing.
Now i will ask my money back or to change my vaio with another model.

I have 1 more year warranty i just want another notebook now , i will ask a lawyear what i should do for have my money back!
This is a factory problem if they cant fix it they should give us the money back!
wow, while checking my previous post I noticed only one month passed from the moment I got my laptop back from repair.
Anyway, the fan is still working as it should. Let's hope it stays that way
