Does anyone know how to do this? Tried following VAIO manual without success! Any help/advice would be appreciated.
Solved! Go to Solution.
Hi Rich,
Surprise, surprise!
That actually worked!
With the machine powered down I put USB memory stick into USB2 slot.
Pressed ASSIST buton and
editted BIOS.
changed BOOT MODE to LEGACY and saved and exitted.
PC booted into KNOPPIX without any problems.
Exitted out of the linux system and editted BIOS MODE back to UEFI
and back into Windows 8
I haven't tried booting from DVD/CD but I cann't see why it shouldn't work.
Thanks for your help.
I guess that this can be closed now.
Regards,
Bob
Hi rjplester,
You haven’t said exactly what you have tried but I assume these are the instructions that you have followed...
“Booting Your VAIO Computer from External Devices
You can boot your VAIO computer from external devices, such as an optical disc drive, a USB floppy disk drive, or a USB flash drive by using the BIOS function.
1. Connect an external device to your VAIO computer.
2. Press the ASSIST button while your VAIO computer is off.
The VAIO Care Rescue Mode screen appears.
3. Select Start from media (USB device/optical disc).
The booting process from the external device starts.
Note
• Disconnect all devices from your VAIO computer except for the external device from which you intend to boot up. Some devices cannot be used to boot the computer, or cannot be used with the computer.
• If an AC adapter is supplied with the external device, be sure to connect it to an AC power source in advance.”
...If so and you are still having problems and are using a USB 3 port try USB 2. To eliminate a problem with the Flash Drive try booting from this on another computer.

Hi Rich,
Thanks. I've tried all the things you suggets without any success. On my old Toshiba laptop when I press F11 it displays a list of all bootable devices and I select the one I want. On this VAIO it seems to go straight to trying to boot and then displays "Operating System not found".
Hi rjplester,
With Windows 8 none of the function keys work at boot due to the speed of load. Instead you need to use the Assist button when shut down – doing this do you see the option to start from media (USB device/optical disk [F11]?
Are you certain that the media on the flash dive is bootable?
Rich
Hi Rich,
I'm sure the media are bootable as I've used them many times on my old lap-top.
I found this on the net but haven't tried it yet.
Basically, it says change Boot Mode to Legacy, then boot from USB and change back when you,ve finished.
I'm a bit nervious about changing BIOS but it might work.
Regards,
Bob
Hi Bob,
If that option is available in the BIOS then if you change it you can always revert back.
However to access the BIOS settings when running Windows 8 the instructions given in that screenshot will not work - you will need to press the Assist button when fully shut down to open Vaio Care Rescue Mode and then select ‘Start BIOS setup [F2]'.
Rich
Hi Rich,
I know there's a different procedure on a VAIO machine but I will give it a try.
Thanks for your help.
As this was my first posting here how do I close it? or just leave it open?
Regards,
Bob
Hi Bob,
Leave it open for the time being and let us know how you get on. I can close it for you as and when you have found a solution.
