I have just taken delivery of my vaio laptop. I cannot get the updates to work. They keep saying there are updates available but then nothing downloads
I can't get access to the manual, it keeps sending me round in circles
I want to make a recovery disc on a USB stick, but how to do that says refer to the manual that I can't download
I am really unhappy about this lack of support. Is there anywhere on the internet where I can download these things direct
Thanks for any help

Hi MICKALLS.
This is a User Forum - if you want to speak to the official Sony Support, click on the SUPPORT Tab at the top of this page -> Online Support -> Contact Us -> Vaio and Computing. Enter your Vaio's Serial Number and you will be given the contact options.
Help here comes from other users like you and me who voluntarily try to help.
You should have received a 'Quick Start Guide' with your Vaio and this tells you how to update the preinstalled User Manual using the Charms Menu to access the App called "Vaio Manual".

Personally, I tend to go to the Sony USA website as they still do a .PDF User Guide for download. The trouble is that the models may have slightly different features, but I find the User Guides OK. You can download a .PDF or a IE interactive manual from here:
There is a Troubleshooting and Recovery Guide which can be downloaded as a .PDF from the Sony Europe website which outlines Recovery Media and Recovery:
ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/manuals/consumer/4445110111.pdf
The specific page from the manual dealing with the making of Recovery Media can be found here:
The situation is far from ideal and I have no idea why Sony have made things so complex.

Hi MICKALLS and welcome.
If you give us your Vaio Model we can give you a direct link to the downloads page for your model. Alternatively, click on SUPPORT at the top of this page, choose 'Online Support' and enter your Vaio model in the search box.
Does everything else download OK? Have you installed any anti-virus/firewall software like Norton? If yes, have you fully uninstalled the preinstalled McAfee software? Two AV programs may block downloads over the internet.
The manual will not download as a PDF. It is just a load of files in a zip. How am I expected to rread that? The model I have is SVE1712C5E. Do not tell me to download it again from your website as it cannot be read, as above
I have not installed any other anti virus, just photoshop and Microsoft office
It would also be really usefull to see your reply when I'm writting this , instead of my original question
