I just picked up an STR-DN1040 and have it hooked up to my KDL-40NX703 - I want to use HDMI ARC so that the audio from the TV tuner goes through the amp. I believe I should be able to use HDMI ARC for this without the need for a TOS link cable. I have connected HDMI port 1 on the TV to output A on the amp which I believe is as it should be.
The TV recognises that an HDMI sound system has been connected and I can control the amp via the TV remote using Bravia Sync and the amp turns on and off when the tv turns on and goes into standby.
The problem is that there's no audio from the TV via the amp. I get audio if I use anything else via the amp such as my PS4 or streaming music over the network, so I suspect it's something not set up right with ARC.
The "manual" that comes with the STR-DN1040 is pretty useless and I'm hoping I've just missed something. Thanks
Hi there
I guess the first thing to check is : Are you using a HDMI cable that supports ARC (HDMI 1.4a) ?
Oh, and ensure that the TV Speakers is set to "Audio System"
Cheers
Also when in the 'Home Menu' check in the 'Settings' - 'HDMI' that you have 'Pass Through' set to 'Auto' (Page 94)
Additionally there are a number of 'Audio Out' settings to check:
'AMP' (sound is output from AMP only)
'TV & AMP' (sound output is from both TV & AMP) (Page 94-95)
I've been told that the 40NX703 only supports HDMI 1.3 (therefore no ARC support), so I kinda stopped looking into it.
Shame. Will have to start saving for a new the 4K TV sooner rather than later I guess.
HI there
Thats rather interesting, because according to the manual HERE and HERE it states ARC on HDMI 1. See below:
So I am a little unsure on whats going on. Where did you get the info on the NX703 is only HDMI 1.3?
The NX703 came out in the later part of 2010 (I belive) and HDMI 1.4 (which includes ARC) specs came out 28th May 2009. HDMI 1.4a came out 4th March 2010.
It is conceivable that the TV has HDMI 1.3 as designing a TV (and specs) can take a little time. However, why then does the manual state that it has ARC?
I think if you cannot get it working (even after a change in HDMI cables), try contacting Sony Support for clarrification and advice : HERE
Hope that assists you anyhow.
Cheers
So a bit of a late reply, but I decided to try another cable. Given that it's a huge pain to replace the 15m long HDMI cable I have, I bought an HDMI 2.0 cable hoping that if it worked, I wouldn't have to replace it again for a while.
So a quick test running the cable across the room immidately showed ARC as working so it was definitely the cable!
4 hours of routing cables around my living room and into the cupboard with all the AV gear and I am one happy bunny. One HDMI cable to the TV, one remote and all my equipment happily auto switching thanks to CEC.
Thanks for all the really useful info posted here
Brilliant - Thank you for replying back and confirming that it works - always love hearing a success story !!
If I may just add to this one.
Users who don't have ARC can also get around this by connecting the audio out from the TV via Phono connections (if you have that option) to the TV Phono Inputs on the receiver.
Select TV on the receiver to enjoy TV sound output through the AMP.
Works great for me!
Advice from the manual:
To listen to the sound from the TV
If your TV does not support System Audio
Control function, set the “Audio Out” to
“TV+AMP” in the HDMI Settings menu
(page 94).
I tried the above setting 'TV+Amp' but discovered that no Dolby Decoding is performed and all audio is output as PCM on the front display. It sounded okay and to be honest I didn't give it a second thought but then after swapping the 'Audio Out' to just 'AMP' I was blown away by the difference. My receiver now sounds a million times better than it did previously.
Hi. Try using OUT B instead of OUT A. Works fine for me.
