My front display panel randomly turned off one day and it generally stays off...occasionally it will light up again for a small period of time and then go off again. It isn’t the dimmer mode or PURE DIRECT either. Any suggestions on how to fix it? I’ve software updated already.
The actual receiver seems to work fine apart from the display panel. If it never came on I would assume it was dead but it does sometimes randomly. PLEASE HELPPP
Hi Paul,
Welcome to the community.
I'll see if I can track down any answers regarding this display panel issue. Maybe someone else in the community can assist in the meantime.
Thanks,
Pascale
Hi Paulgms,
This sounds a bit weird. Have you tried initializing the amplifier to factory settings? I found the steps in the Help Guide, available through this link: http://bit.ly/2Wwyc8e.

Hi Pascale,
I have the same issues. Tried reset no luck. But sometimes when i press the DIMMER button on the front panel it works for a while and goes off. It is really annoying as I cant see what the volume is or the source, etc.
Can Sony help?
Thanks,
Chamara.
How long does it stay on when you press the DIMMER button? or is it just a flash? Also, have you tried disconnecting everything from it and unplug it from the mains for a few minutes to depower it and then try starting it up again?
I can confirm that this exact problem occurred to my older Sony receiver STR-DB790 for years until completely dimmed out. No display at all!!! The new one I bought STR-DH790 yet hasn't shown this issue but the digits in the display are sometimes less or more vivid than before, meaning that the display is almost never the same. I'm seriously afraid that the new one is following the trail of the older, therefore an advice by some Sony technician would be highly appreciated!
I think that'd be for the best as well, you can find the nearest service centre using Sony's official locator here: https://locator.sony/en_GB/servicecenters/

UPDATE: My display sometimes worked and if I tapped the unit it would often come back, but didn't last long.
I took it to an electronics shop near me (not a Sony approved service centre). He described it as a type of 'corrosion' (nothing to do with water/liquid). It was an easy enough fix for him to perform and took less then 1 hour to complete the job. Total cost £40. Since then unit has worked as expected with no issues on the display.
It seems this issue is not uncommon but can be fixed relatively simply by someone that fixes electrical goods.
