You can change the way your phone shows the date. The way the date is shown is related to the language settings, if you choose English (United States) as your chosen language the date will be shown the American way, and if you choose English (United Kingdom) the date will be shown the European way.
You can change your language by going to Settings > Languages and Input and then tap Languages. Find English in the list and choose your preferred country.
