I am trying to get sound from the W9 back to my Onkyo SR 507 AV Amp.
I am getting no sound at all when the Optical cable is connected to the output of the TV.
The TV is set up to output to "Stereo System"
When I turn the TV on it shows a message saying "checking external speakers", and there is no follow up error message displayed.
The same Optical cable works when plugged in to my Sonos box, so I am confident that the Amp is set up correctly, and that the cable works.
In my mind the only issue can be that for some reason there is nothing being output from the TV.

It turns out that this appears to be a known limitation according to a Hint and Tip page.
If there is no HDMI Control then it will not output.
It would have been nice if the 45 minute support phone call had come to the same conclusion, instead of a very generic "the amp is not compatible" with no valid reason given.
Thanks for your help.
I have it working now, having bought a new AV Amp.
Time whinge to Sony directly about a waste of time phone call I guess.

Hi there
Just to confirm, your setup should look like this:
- AV Receriver (HDMI OUT) to TV (HDMI IN)
- AV Receiver (OPT 1 - TV/TAPE) to TV (Optical OUT)
- On TV, Digital Audio OUT should be set to "Auto"
- On TV, Speakers are set to "Audio System"
- On AV Receiver Input Selector (TV/TAPE) has been assigned "OPT 1"
- On AV Receiver you have selected the TV/TAPE input and displays that on the display panel of AV Receiver
That last one is important when TV says "Checking connection with external speakers", you might need to manually select TV/TAPE input via AV Receiver.
If all that is correct, ensure that the TV's firmware is upto date.
If it is, and it still doesnt work, perform a factory reset of the TV, and even the AV Reciever and start again. It might clear any "stuck" settings
Hope this helps.
Cheers
