Hi everyone!
If you have recently bought a new VGN-CS11 series notebook, I'd ask that you take a moment to read this post.
Since I unboxed the new notebook, I have been experiencing strange noises from the fan unit evey time it operates. Before, it used to be simply that every time the fan stopped working, it made a soft "growl" noise (probably due to some internal vibration) for a mere second or two. Recently, however, it has also begun to make a strange, barely audible "clicking sound" as the fan starts up and operates, accompanied by the "growl" at the end, like before. At first, I was led to believe that it was just the normal operating noise that the fan made (although quite annoying!), but due to these recent developments, I am more and more convinced that this is some problem or malfunction that perhaps, will only get worse with time.
Other CS11 users have already posted in the thread "Problem with fan!!" that they also experience this problem, and, from what I've been able to gather, it does not seem like an isolated problem... but this is what we need to confirm.
That is the purpose of this thread.
I would like to ask and encourage all CS11 users to post in this thread if they also experience the same "problem" with the fan (abnormal noises that are clearly distinguishable from normal operation) or anything fan-related, especially if you have experienced them since you bought the notebook and haven't done anything that could "provoke" them (like dropping the notebook or hitting it in some way, blocking the ventilation vents, etc...). This is to have a general scope that this is not an isolated problem that is only happening to a few, and that way, perhaps Sony will take an interest and take the necessary measures to correct this problem if this, in fact, turns out to be a generalised problem.
I have already created a new case with e-Support regarding this issue. Note that these are brand new laptops that have been out on sale for barely a month, and now would be a good time to correct any problems that may arise. If this turns out to be a common problem for most CS11 users, then we should all contact Vaio-Link or e-Support and report the problem, so that Sony will take this problem into consideration if enough people have it.
Remember: the sooner, the better!
Also, perhaps it would also be of interest that those CS11 users that DON'T experience this problem also post in this thread, to see how many DO and how many DON'T... it may be interesting to also know.
Ok... without taking any more of your time, I leave this thread to fellow CS11 users and to anyone that might be able to lend a helping hand. Thanks!!!
Hi SuzyP,
welcome to Club VAIO..![]()
If you're concerned then I suggest you contact Sony Vaio support, use the following link to find the contact details: Sony Vaio Support
Thalamus, if you're about, I'd welcome your thoughts on the reason why Stefano's CS has been successfully quietened!
Hi BrianVAIO,
what version BIOS do you have.?
It would appear that Stefano's CS is now quieter but as with other users the replacement fan can be heard starting and stopping but the 'reported' noise..
Hi everybody!
It is the first time that I write here but I have been reading this blog for a loong time (as long as the fan problem appeared)! It's nice to find a place where the users can solve or share their problems about the same laptops!
I was about to buy a a new Vaio (pink) for my sister in January from the CS serie when I came across this "fan problem". I have been waiting to see if the new fans solve the problem but time passes and my sister is fed up of waiting her birthday's present.
The thing is that the model I wanted to buy is a CS21 serie instead of the CS11. Does anyone know if this fan-problem appears at the whole CS serie?
And another question: does the problem appear in all the laptops from the CS11?
Thanks a lot for everything!!
mine has been fixed. For Sure
Hi there,
I decided to wait more than 3 weeks before posting the details of my experience with this issue, whilst always keeping an eye on it, as I wanted to make sure that things stayed the same before giving info.
My Vaio CS11 was sent on a monday and i received it back the following wednesday. The turnaroud was so quick that I actually thought it was not dispatched at the repair centre at all... but so it was and it was fixed.
I have been using it for more than 3 weeks now in relatively warm weather, trying to stress the CPU as much as possible, playing games whilst keeping other applications on the background etc... and the fan always kept very silent. Most important, it doesn't spin up and down every 4 seconds as it used to do. When it's heating, it just spins with more cycles per sec, as it should be.
On the other side of the story, the repair centre never disclosed any technical information on the job that was done and also, the document that I received was simply stating "fan replaced" so I have no idea if they updated the BIOS. There was no data loss, too.
The pc was repaired at the repair centre in UK. It's an overflow partner, not Sony itself, called Teleplan.
Let me know if you need more info.
Bye!

Dear all,
As I already said I had to fight to have my laptop fixed.I mean they called me saying the new fan model was available. So I sent the pc,and I called after 5 days since it was taking so long. They told me they didn't find any kind of problem,I said that ther was a problem instead and that if they just leave the pc open without stressing the CPU they wouldn't be able to "hear" the problem. So they said that they would have analyzed it better. So they did because I found in my recicle bin a program (not used by me) used for stressing the cpu (I read about the program usage in the program info). So I had the fan replaced. Now there's no noise andwhen the fan starts doesn't last very long..and i have to admit that is less frequent than before. For brian VAIO: I generally use my pc on the VAIO optimization status, but i change status if i have to do hard stuff or if i use the battey.
My sony was sent to the telepan of germany.I hope my experience can be of any use.and I hope all of you can have their laptop fixed.
cya!

This is what I want from my CS11's fan. Why can't Sony support staff understand that? Almost as frustrating as the fan's noise itself!
My PC went to Teleplan in Colchester too. I'd love to know, if you don't mind oskarmat, if you've changed any settings yourself, or if you've left everything untouched since getting the PC back. For example, have you stayed with one particular Power Plan, such as "VAIO Optimized", or have you varied it, depending on the use you're making of the PC? Or do you think that, apart from swapping out the fan, the Teleplan engineer might have changed any of your PC's Vista settings? Also, could you post what version of the BIOS your PC has?
And to answer your questions I am always with Vaio Optimized, I never changed it. I don't think they tinkered with my setting either... guys, what I thing is going on here is that they simply replaced some of the fans with faulty ones and other ones with working fans. Mine was just luck I guess... but who knows, I may turn the pc on tomorrow and find that horrible noise again....
My fan didnt make any noise when i bought notebook but after some months it started to had some problems and to makes noise.
Now they changed the fan but we need wait and see it the same problem will happen again.
