Hi everyone!
If you have recently bought a new VGN-CS11 series notebook, I'd ask that you take a moment to read this post.
Since I unboxed the new notebook, I have been experiencing strange noises from the fan unit evey time it operates. Before, it used to be simply that every time the fan stopped working, it made a soft "growl" noise (probably due to some internal vibration) for a mere second or two. Recently, however, it has also begun to make a strange, barely audible "clicking sound" as the fan starts up and operates, accompanied by the "growl" at the end, like before. At first, I was led to believe that it was just the normal operating noise that the fan made (although quite annoying!), but due to these recent developments, I am more and more convinced that this is some problem or malfunction that perhaps, will only get worse with time.
Other CS11 users have already posted in the thread "Problem with fan!!" that they also experience this problem, and, from what I've been able to gather, it does not seem like an isolated problem... but this is what we need to confirm.
That is the purpose of this thread.
I would like to ask and encourage all CS11 users to post in this thread if they also experience the same "problem" with the fan (abnormal noises that are clearly distinguishable from normal operation) or anything fan-related, especially if you have experienced them since you bought the notebook and haven't done anything that could "provoke" them (like dropping the notebook or hitting it in some way, blocking the ventilation vents, etc...). This is to have a general scope that this is not an isolated problem that is only happening to a few, and that way, perhaps Sony will take an interest and take the necessary measures to correct this problem if this, in fact, turns out to be a generalised problem.
I have already created a new case with e-Support regarding this issue. Note that these are brand new laptops that have been out on sale for barely a month, and now would be a good time to correct any problems that may arise. If this turns out to be a common problem for most CS11 users, then we should all contact Vaio-Link or e-Support and report the problem, so that Sony will take this problem into consideration if enough people have it.
Remember: the sooner, the better!
Also, perhaps it would also be of interest that those CS11 users that DON'T experience this problem also post in this thread, to see how many DO and how many DON'T... it may be interesting to also know.
Ok... without taking any more of your time, I leave this thread to fellow CS11 users and to anyone that might be able to lend a helping hand. Thanks!!!
Sony called me this morning and said that they had good news! They told me that they had got the improved fans and that with this, my fan problem would be solved permanently
Something must have happened during this weekend because last Friday they couldn't garantee me anything. This is so fantastic!! I can't wait to get my Vaio back to see/hear if this really is the case!
Brian, I hope that you will get an improved fan too.
Thanks,
Mette

Just got the call telling me there's no point sending it back to Sony because "the machine is working within specification".
I remain disappointed, if perhaps not surprised. In recent years, I have not bought any new Sony products, except for a replacement AV receiver for one that came prematurely to an end, even though the repair people said they could not find the fault. This CS11 is the exception, and there were extenuating circumstances whereby I just chose the laptop that was in the shop window (over the years, I've tended to just replace the innards of my PC tower myself every two or three years, and do a fresh Windows install). In terms of other consumer electronics, I would often have chosen Sony in the past, after researching the various options, but they just haven't been providing the best products in recent years, I've felt.
Buyer beware, I suppose, and that's what I get for taking less than 24 hours to reach the decision to buy this computer.
Got my laptop back today - Yay.
There was a bit if a delay because I said I wanted the keys replacing - But Sony said it would be at a cost of £217!!! ... So I am going to ring up and try and get them to send some over. They said they would only send 5 but i need 9 replacing... fingers crossed. Anyone else had the problem of the letters wearing off?
Good news is, the fan has been fixed. It is nice and quiet(er)
It has also had a BIOS update too.
xx
Hi all,
I'm furious to see Sony waits few month to solve such a problem.
I've bought a CS11Z to my wife like other and never use it by myself. To night, I had to install a software and I'm borring to ear this fan !!! and the hardrive too !!!
Due probably to a bad hard drive or a noisy case.
When they conceived this computer, did they use it before selling it ? Perhaps yes, in a manufacture !!!
It's my first sony, and the last one... and now, I will have to fight with sony to repair it.
I'm lucky, I will be able to test the support 😞
Bye
I'm fed up to ear this noisy computer
Hello to all,
I also have this problem with the fan of my CS11S laptop. Does Sony actually solve some things if I'll send them the laptop or they will make it worse? Thanks
Send it in for repair... after a few days it'll be all fixed.
