Hi everyone!
If you have recently bought a new VGN-CS11 series notebook, I'd ask that you take a moment to read this post.
Since I unboxed the new notebook, I have been experiencing strange noises from the fan unit evey time it operates. Before, it used to be simply that every time the fan stopped working, it made a soft "growl" noise (probably due to some internal vibration) for a mere second or two. Recently, however, it has also begun to make a strange, barely audible "clicking sound" as the fan starts up and operates, accompanied by the "growl" at the end, like before. At first, I was led to believe that it was just the normal operating noise that the fan made (although quite annoying!), but due to these recent developments, I am more and more convinced that this is some problem or malfunction that perhaps, will only get worse with time.
Other CS11 users have already posted in the thread "Problem with fan!!" that they also experience this problem, and, from what I've been able to gather, it does not seem like an isolated problem... but this is what we need to confirm.
That is the purpose of this thread.
I would like to ask and encourage all CS11 users to post in this thread if they also experience the same "problem" with the fan (abnormal noises that are clearly distinguishable from normal operation) or anything fan-related, especially if you have experienced them since you bought the notebook and haven't done anything that could "provoke" them (like dropping the notebook or hitting it in some way, blocking the ventilation vents, etc...). This is to have a general scope that this is not an isolated problem that is only happening to a few, and that way, perhaps Sony will take an interest and take the necessary measures to correct this problem if this, in fact, turns out to be a generalised problem.
I have already created a new case with e-Support regarding this issue. Note that these are brand new laptops that have been out on sale for barely a month, and now would be a good time to correct any problems that may arise. If this turns out to be a common problem for most CS11 users, then we should all contact Vaio-Link or e-Support and report the problem, so that Sony will take this problem into consideration if enough people have it.
Remember: the sooner, the better!
Also, perhaps it would also be of interest that those CS11 users that DON'T experience this problem also post in this thread, to see how many DO and how many DON'T... it may be interesting to also know.
Ok... without taking any more of your time, I leave this thread to fellow CS11 users and to anyone that might be able to lend a helping hand. Thanks!!!
In any case, from reading other posts Sony just seem to be replacing the laptops or bunging in the same part which seems to be really badly manufactured.
That is no longer the case James and welcome to Club VAIO..
hi thalamus,i'm so disappointed! i've sent my cs to assistance and waited for a week, today I called sony to have news about my pc and they told me that the fan is completely NORMAL and they were going to send it back as it was,so I told it HAS a problem and they replied that they would analyze it more...but they won't assure the diagnosis change...so i won't have it back untill monday and without the assurement it will be fine.they didn't know a thing about the new fan model even if they called me the last week to tell me they had "improved spare parts".Thalamus, are you close with sony? isn't there a way to explain to them?? i'm wasting time with my thesis ..i can use the university pc but i con't work at home during evenings...and weekends....
can you help me?
thanks...I?m very disappointed
Hello, I'm new to the world of VAIO - and have owned a VAIO CS11S for around 3 months now. It’s been brilliant except the excessive fan noise - it seems to sound like the fan is rattling and chirps when the fan kicks in. The driver also seems to be rubbish - allowing the fan to keep coming on and off every 2-3 seconds or so..
IS this happening to anyone else? I have not yet contacted Sony regarding this issue - but compared to other VAIO's this seems to be pretty bad build quality... not impressed after spending £800 on it and probably won’t be buying a VAIO again

Hello, thank you for pointing out the other thread about the CS fan noise. I am also writing my dissertation thesis and can t concentrate on it in a quiet room because of the fan noise – it’s not the best experience considering its my first VAIO.
I will contact Sony about the fan and let’s hope they can fix it – or I’m selling it and getting a different laptop as the performance, keyboard etc (for writing for long periods of time) are brilliant – but the noise is just so very annoying!
I also have a feeling that after a year or so of the fan grinding away, it is likely that it will go wrong and overheat destroying my laptop – so I’m getting out while I can and selling it! shame really
Thanks for the reply
Tom

Hi Coral pink,
I'll see what I can find out for you and I'll do what I can, can't promise anything though as I don't work for Sony..
Since getting my CS back, I've been plagued with a wi-fi connection problem, "connected with limited access". This is very annoying, and, google as I might, I cannot solve the issue where this error repeatedly occurs and then, having suggested that the problem is that I haven't turned the wi-fi switch to "on" (when, of course, it is on), Vista says that it cannot find any networks.
Anyone having any similar problems? Could it be linked to the BIOS update that my computer had when it was with Sony for the fan repair? I noticed that some other settings on my computer had been changed when I got it back, for example the Google sidebar was docking on the right, like when I first got the PC, not on the left, the setting it was on when I sent the PC to Sony.
hi thalamus,i got my CS back and the fan seems to work fine..i mean it always starts and stops frequently but there's no noise at all for the moment. The sony girl at the phone didn't know if they changed the fan with the same model or with a new one,she only knew they changed it.How did you know i had the improved one? They also did a BIOS update,so BrianVAIO i'll let you know about the wi-fi on monday when I'll try it in university.

Anyone know if i can take it back to the store even if i ordered it online?
I have the dreaded fan noise that so many of you are talking about.
There has always been a noise but has got so much worse over the past few days. Really loud for about 5 seconds then stops, then comes back on again.
I have already been in touch with support before about the quality of the product as the letters on the keys keep fading - Not happy at all!
