Hi everyone!
If you have recently bought a new VGN-CS11 series notebook, I'd ask that you take a moment to read this post.
Since I unboxed the new notebook, I have been experiencing strange noises from the fan unit evey time it operates. Before, it used to be simply that every time the fan stopped working, it made a soft "growl" noise (probably due to some internal vibration) for a mere second or two. Recently, however, it has also begun to make a strange, barely audible "clicking sound" as the fan starts up and operates, accompanied by the "growl" at the end, like before. At first, I was led to believe that it was just the normal operating noise that the fan made (although quite annoying!), but due to these recent developments, I am more and more convinced that this is some problem or malfunction that perhaps, will only get worse with time.
Other CS11 users have already posted in the thread "Problem with fan!!" that they also experience this problem, and, from what I've been able to gather, it does not seem like an isolated problem... but this is what we need to confirm.
That is the purpose of this thread.
I would like to ask and encourage all CS11 users to post in this thread if they also experience the same "problem" with the fan (abnormal noises that are clearly distinguishable from normal operation) or anything fan-related, especially if you have experienced them since you bought the notebook and haven't done anything that could "provoke" them (like dropping the notebook or hitting it in some way, blocking the ventilation vents, etc...). This is to have a general scope that this is not an isolated problem that is only happening to a few, and that way, perhaps Sony will take an interest and take the necessary measures to correct this problem if this, in fact, turns out to be a generalised problem.
I have already created a new case with e-Support regarding this issue. Note that these are brand new laptops that have been out on sale for barely a month, and now would be a good time to correct any problems that may arise. If this turns out to be a common problem for most CS11 users, then we should all contact Vaio-Link or e-Support and report the problem, so that Sony will take this problem into consideration if enough people have it.
Remember: the sooner, the better!
Also, perhaps it would also be of interest that those CS11 users that DON'T experience this problem also post in this thread, to see how many DO and how many DON'T... it may be interesting to also know.
Ok... without taking any more of your time, I leave this thread to fellow CS11 users and to anyone that might be able to lend a helping hand. Thanks!!!
Just so you know...
I have been in contact with sony about this issue via email
Anyone know the average wait to get the item picked up and resent?
I really cannot do without my laptop for any length of time as i use it for work purposes.
Thanks, Nat.

^^ Thanks for the info
So hope that I can get the laptop sorted on the first send-off - It is being picked up on Weds.
As I mentioned before, I really need my laptop for work purposes, and can't really afford to be without it again!
(I purchased a Vaio because I thought it would be high in the reliability stakes.. little did I know! lol)
Any idea why some are being repaired with, what seems to be, higher quality products than others?
Thanks, Nat.

Looks like houhai and coral pink have had things sorted. Why oh why can't this be done for the rest of us? Stefano's description of the fan no longer speeding up every few seconds is how things should be -- and all without a BIOS update. Surely Sony could publicise the fix, if it's something that consumers can address themselves with a settings change, or else issue a recall if some other fix is required.
I would tolerate this noise if it was associated with watching a BD movie, on speakers or with earphones, but having to put up with it with just an e-mail client and a browser open as I type now (plus background processes like AV, firewall, etc.) is just so annoying. If studying or doing work stuff, it makes it very hard to concentrate after a while. My wife doesn't appreciated it either as she's doing a lot of studying at the moment too. Though her four-year-old iBook's fan is never intrusive, the noise of this one (from the other side of the room) is.
Hi Stafano,
could you let us know what version BIOS is on your VAIO please.?
To enter the BIOS restart your Vaio and Press F2 when you see the Vaio logo.
Thalamus, if you're about, I'd welcome your thoughts on the reason why Stefano's CS has been successfully quietened!
Hi All,
I have a 2 month old Vaio CS11S (pink) which i bought about 40 days ago. Up until now it has been absolutely perfect, no problems at all, until this morning when I turned it on and the fan started making hideous noises! I have read all the posts on this thread, and conlcude that I have the same problem that most of you have - the fan comes on about every ten seconds or so, and makes a really load whirring noise - its driving me mental!
whilst I'm happy that it doesn't seem to be a terminal problem, I would appreciate some advice on how to proceed now?
I use my laptop for work (I'm self employed) so really can't send it away - can anybody suggest how best I proceed from here?
thanks!
Hi SuzyP,
