The fan on my Vaio is pretty much running at full speed the whole time it is switched on. My laptop has started every so often to freeze and then catch up. Its only every now and then but my last Laptop started doing this this when it was on its way out, so I think there is something wrong.
Specs of laptop are as follows;
Windows 7 SP1
Intel Core i5
CPU M480@ 2.67Ghz
RAM 4gb
64-bit
Core temp stats
Idle 71-77
Busy 84-87
CPU runs at around 30%
Physical Memory 1.7gb
I'm all up to date and I've checked what I have running in the background, I dont think there is too much running at the same time. Randomly when I opened up the My Computer Properties just now the CPU dropped right down to 1% and core temps are now at 40-44 - coincidence i think but thought id mention anyway.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
John
Hi John and welcome.
It looks like your processor is running too hot when under load. The freeze happens when your processor reaches its thermal limit and thermal protection clicks in at around 90 deg.
Check the following:
1. What program are you running when it cuts out? If it is a game, check your Vaio has the specifications to run it at the settings you have set.
2. Check that the fan has not become blocked with dust. This is the most common cause of overheating. Try using a can of compressed air to clear the vents. If it is too bad, you may have to disassemble the Vaio to clear out the vents around the processor.
3. If the above does not help, you may have to consider replacing the thermal paste between the processor and the heatsink. The thermal paste only costs a few pounds but it involves a lot of labour to remove the processor. Also, the fan regulation switch may be faulty.
4. Try not to use your Vaio on a soft surface. This will restrict airflow through the bottom of the Vaio and can cause overheating.
