Hi everyone!
If you have recently bought a new VGN-CS11 series notebook, I'd ask that you take a moment to read this post.
Since I unboxed the new notebook, I have been experiencing strange noises from the fan unit evey time it operates. Before, it used to be simply that every time the fan stopped working, it made a soft "growl" noise (probably due to some internal vibration) for a mere second or two. Recently, however, it has also begun to make a strange, barely audible "clicking sound" as the fan starts up and operates, accompanied by the "growl" at the end, like before. At first, I was led to believe that it was just the normal operating noise that the fan made (although quite annoying!), but due to these recent developments, I am more and more convinced that this is some problem or malfunction that perhaps, will only get worse with time.
Other CS11 users have already posted in the thread "Problem with fan!!" that they also experience this problem, and, from what I've been able to gather, it does not seem like an isolated problem... but this is what we need to confirm.
That is the purpose of this thread.
I would like to ask and encourage all CS11 users to post in this thread if they also experience the same "problem" with the fan (abnormal noises that are clearly distinguishable from normal operation) or anything fan-related, especially if you have experienced them since you bought the notebook and haven't done anything that could "provoke" them (like dropping the notebook or hitting it in some way, blocking the ventilation vents, etc...). This is to have a general scope that this is not an isolated problem that is only happening to a few, and that way, perhaps Sony will take an interest and take the necessary measures to correct this problem if this, in fact, turns out to be a generalised problem.
I have already created a new case with e-Support regarding this issue. Note that these are brand new laptops that have been out on sale for barely a month, and now would be a good time to correct any problems that may arise. If this turns out to be a common problem for most CS11 users, then we should all contact Vaio-Link or e-Support and report the problem, so that Sony will take this problem into consideration if enough people have it.
Remember: the sooner, the better!
Also, perhaps it would also be of interest that those CS11 users that DON'T experience this problem also post in this thread, to see how many DO and how many DON'T... it may be interesting to also know.
Ok... without taking any more of your time, I leave this thread to fellow CS11 users and to anyone that might be able to lend a helping hand. Thanks!!!
The new fan's been in use for a little over three hours this evening, huffing and puffing every few seconds, and now, in the past 10 minutes or so, is making an additional, louder noise, a chirpy rattle of sorts, the sort of noise that the previous fan made in the early days, before it went on to start making clattering and grinding noise a few weeks later. Seems I got my hopes up too much last night, when the fan sounded loud but fan-like. I only had the laptop on for an hour or so last night, though.
The basic, business-grade HP laptop that is my PC at work was near silent today. I cannot hear anything much at all from it unless I listen closely at the left-hand edge of it. Frustrating, particularly given the difference in price between a cheap grey business-grade laptop and the CS11.
I hope thalamus...I think i'm going to call them on monday though...This is a hard period for me I'm writing my thesis i need the pc,but the temptation of having it fixed once for all it very high...
Hi coral pink,
I hope all goes well with the thesis, please let me know what Sony say after you've contacted them on Monday?
Hi thalamus,Sony contacted me before me .thay told me that the new fan models are available and that are different from the previous and they ordered them especially for the CS.So we organized the pick up for wednesday.I hope this time the problem will be solved. They assured me that from the one who had the new fan installed there were no more complaints.
Sony contacted me before me
Hi,
Within 4 days of buying my CS11 the fan inside started making this strange clunking sound and revving up and down. I tolerated it for the best part but now the fan is making this aggressive grating sound and I'm tempted to send it back. My only problem is that I don't live in the UK anymore (where I bought it) so it would perhaps be a big problem.
In any case, from reading other posts Sony just seem to be replacing the laptops or bunging in the same part which seems to be really badly manufactured. On that note, could anyone recommend a replacement part/part number which I could use to replace the fan? It's pretty easy to take the back plate off from what I can tell. Fixing laptops is nothing new to me so it might work out better this way.
I've looked on ebay and loads of other places but nothing! Is this part proprietary for this chassis?
Thanks,
James
Hello!
I recently bought a Vaio CS21S and i'm having problem with the fan too. When I first got it, it sounded exactly as the one's put up on YouTube. Starting and stopping constantly and with a certain "err" sound at the end. I have sent it in and got it back. The fan was replaced but it still starts and stop rather loudly many times a minute. I contacted Sony again and today my Vaio is sent in for repair for the second time. I explained to Sony what the problem was and told them about this thread and they said that I would get another type of fan model this time. I really hope so as it seams to be the best solution!

I've come across the following in a user review of a CS21S on amazon.co.uk:
"I have received this product on 19th march 09 and the look and feel of this product is amazing. In CS11S series the fan was so noisy. This problem has been rectified in CS21S series and its performance is too good."
I wonder if it's worth considering a move to a CS21. On the other hand, MetteHelene's post does not inspire confidence.

That is no longer the case James and welcome to Club VAIO..
