How to unmute sound

A query was raised in June 2012 but no response was given. I have the same problem. There is no sound from the tablet and Settings - Sounds - volume shows both the apps and notifications muted. How can these be unmuted? I have tried resetting to factory settings without success.

have you tried installing (and using to toggle) a Mute Widget form Google Play?

Thanks for this. I feel an idiot. My wife showed me how to unmute by pressing the volume + button on the side of the machine! I am so used to Windows machines where the volume is adjusted through the software......Once again, manly thanks.
