anyone know when is the end of life / support end for the xperia xz1 compact...?
i mean with getting updates etc?
It just arrived yesterday with the announcement that it won't get the upgrade to Android 10.
Sadly to say, SONY is making a big doodoo with that desicion. XZ1 and XZ1 compact is premium phones that people paid a lot to get these phone now really dont get the moneys worth. XZ1-series only got 1 big update Oreo to Pie. Sure security updates has come really nicely during the time, but only 1 big update. Thats is just wrong.
Handsets that got 2 major updates (only premium handsets):
Sony Xperia XZ Premium
Sony Xperia XZ
Sony Xperia Z2
Sony Xperia Z3+
Sony Xperira Z5/Z5 Premium/Z5 compact
Sony Xperia X/X performance/X compact (not a premium device)
Sony Xperia S
Sony Xperia T
Sony Xperia V
Sony Xperia Z/Z Ultra
Handsets that only got 1 major updates (Premium handsets):
Sony Xperia XZs
Sony Xperia Z1/Z1 compact
* There are many handsets in midrange and low end that gotten 1 update as well.
Phones that soon will be on par with 2 major updates:
Sony Xperia XZ2/XZ2 compact/XZ2 premium
Sony Xperia XZ3
Phones that will get the first major update:
Sony Xperia 1
Sony Xperia 5
Sony Xperia 10
Sony Xperia 10 plus
So question is, when to buy a device from SONY if you wanna get more than just 1 major update. I have looked at it, and there is nothing that really tells WHY SONY is doing this choise? Even Midrange devices like X compact did get 2 updates and it was release almost at the same time in the year of 2016 in september just like XZ1 was release in September 2017. It gotten in sense the same treatment as a midrange phone from SONY that in sense always gotten 1 updates or non update. But the thing is, it seems like this is nothing that occured that often and only happens now.
I checked a little more. It seems Like 2017 is the low-point for SONY when it comes to updates.
Of all phones SONY made this year wich was 9. Only one phone gotten 2 major updates.
6 phones got 1 major update and 2 just stayed on the first installed version.
And you can't do something? It can be reported
I find it regrettable that this device does not receive another update
Here's what I've been answered by android 10 update:
Thank you for contacting SONY Technical Support.
In connection with your query about the Software update, we inform you that the list of models that can be updated in its Software version, have been launched in 2018, but the Xperia XZ1 compact model was launched in 2017, therefore unfortunately it will not be updated.
I'm honestly embarrassed by the technical support response.
Y xz1 Compact?
I also want to know when end of life support will end.
You could say 2017 is their low-point, but it's because of their update policy which is true but wrongly worded, you see they promise 2 updates for flagship devices, however, they actually give 2 update to flagship *branches*. The XZp, XZ1 and XZ1c are in one branch and the XZ1 (and Compact) actually have a throw away Nougat firmware, the XZs is in the same boat as far as I'm concerned, however, they did just thrash the 3rd year of security patches, which they shouldn't have in my opinion especially because of the enterprise programm, and they should've said something about why the XZ1 series doesn't see the android 10 update to clear the confusion.
Edit: the XZ3 may or may not end up the same way in the near future as it was released with pie and it might be branched together with the XZ2(and the premium and compact) so it could end up only receiving android 10 and no more.
Not really the hardware that bothers, rather the fact that OnePlus 5 (another sd835 device) and the OG pixel (an sd821 device) will/already received android 10, this is what bothers people the most in my opinion other than the fact that Sony didn't make their update policy clear, and yes the XZ1 was sold with android 8 on board but the branch holds android 7 as the first firmware and there's 2-3 throwaway Nougat firmwares for the XZ1 that were not installed on the available product.
